Interesting thing that the tour guide pointed out is on the door lock is the British Coat of Arms purposefully upside down.

The Sword on the mantle is a real commemorative Sword from the state of Virginia to Stephen Decatur for his services. There’s an inscription about his victory over the HMS Macedonian on it.

The Peacemakers is an 1868 painting by George P.A. Healy. It depicts the historic March 27, 1865, strategy session by the Union high command on the steamer River Queen during the final days of the American Civil War. Although he painted it in at least two versions, the largest was destroyed by fire in 1893, and the second sat unknown in storage for decades. Since 1947, it has been in the White House collection.

Historical setting

In March 1865, General-in-Chief Ulysses S. Grant invited President Lincoln to visit his headquarters at City Point, Virginia. By coincidence, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman (then campaigning in North Carolina) happened to visit City Point at the same time. This allowed for the war's only three-way meeting of President Lincoln, General Grant, and General Sherman.[4] Also present was Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter, who wrote about the meeting in his journal, and later recounted:

I shall never forget that council which met on board the River Queen. On the determinations adopted there depended peace, or a continuation of the war with its attendant horrors. That council has been illustrated in a fine painting by Mr. Healy, the artist, who, in casting about for the subject of an historical picture, hit upon this interview, which really was an occasion upon which depended whether or not the war would be continued a year longer. A single false step might have prolonged it indefinitely.

I don’t know where to find the time for this

Usually the point of buying books is to read them. My hand slipped and I ordered three more books; two books about “Preble’s Boys” (naval officers who served under commodore Edward Preble and became influential especially during the War of 1812) and a memoir of David Porter a “Preble Boy”.

The memoir was written by David Porter’s son David Dixon Porter (the second admiral made in the United States and served during the Civil War) so I didn’t mind paying a bit extra for this antique copy. I can’t say too much since this would be officially the first time reading about him but, aren’t first hand accounts best to start with when learning about something?

Obviously this is all just my imagining 👀🙈 — they were never midshipmen concurrently (in fact, by the time Dolph joined in 1826, Glasgow was already a Lieutenant (and married for 2 years already(!))). How they looked is also my imagining, though I tried to base it on their younger selves' looks.

The number on top of them (in the fifth picture) is the age when they were first commissioned midshipman¹, while the number below is the year of their commission¹. Farragut was commissioned in 1810 (aged 9), Lee was commissioned in 1825 (aged 13), Dahlgren was commissioned in 1826 (aged 17).

(1— except for Deedee — the year 1823 was more the year when he first sailed with his father in the Navy (he was probably rated boy seaman at this point). Porter was properly commissioned midshipman in the US Navy only in 1829, aged 16)

Their convoy was attacked off the coast of Haiti by ten barges, each manned by about forty pirates. When Porter's superior, Lieutenant Commander Maley, announced that he would surrender in the face of such overwhelming odds, Porter in an act bordering on mutiny, seized command of the Experiment and prepared for combat. In a battle lasting seven hours, Porter fought off pirates and managed to save two of the four merchant ships."

This Saturday, Munster v Stormers at Thomond Park as part of the United Rugby Championship’s Fifth Round. Munster URC winners will face the Stormers finalists at Thomond Park on Saturday night. Tadhg Beirne and captain Peter O’Mahony are back in the starting lineup after their post-World Cup hiatuses.

Since the Lions defeated Munster in Johannesburg in March 2022 the province has gone undefeated in their previous six URC meetings with South African opponents.

The DHL Stormers had two wins to start their 2023–24 United Rugby Championship, but they have lost in Rounds 3 and 4.

Three straight United Rugby Championship games have never ended in a loss for the Stormers. Munster had defeated the Stormers in all three of their prior meetings including the Cape Town Final from the previous season.
